For parents
Parent guide
Mula Mengaji helps a child get to know the 28 hijaiyah letters with a parent sitting beside them. This guide explains how to use it at home, a little every day.
Five to ten minutes a day
Sit beside your child with the iPad or phone between you. A short session every day sticks better than one long session once a week.
Start with the Continue reading button on the home screen. It opens the last page your child read, so you never have to look for it.
- Read one or two pages, then stop while your child is still enjoying it.
- Go over yesterday's page before opening a new one.
- When your child can say every letter on a page without help, mark that page as mastered in parent mode.
- Parent mode opens when you press and hold the Parents button for 2 seconds, then answer one addition question.
Four levels
Each level brings back all 28 letters with one vowel mark. Letters that look alike are never placed side by side, so your child learns to see the difference.
You can choose the next level at any time in parent mode. Most children are more comfortable once the previous level reads smoothly.
Saying the letters together
Point to the letter, say its sound slowly and clearly, then ask your child to repeat it. Tap a letter on screen to see its name and a romanised spelling as your guide.
The romanised spelling is only a memory aid for parents. Some letters have no matching sound in English or Malay, such as the letters said from the throat. Listen to a Quran teacher and follow how they say it.
- Praise the effort, not only the right answer.
- When your child gets one wrong, calmly say the right sound again.
- Let your child touch the letters and turn the pages with their own finger.
Why there is no audio yet
This prototype deliberately has no recorded recitation, computer voice or AI voice. Quranic letter sounds have to be exact, and the recordings should be made and checked by a Quran teacher.
Until those recordings exist, the audio button only shows a message. Read the letter aloud yourself, or ask a teacher or a fluent family member to read it.
Not yet reviewed by a Quran teacher
Mula Mengaji is still a prototype. The lesson order, the romanised spellings and this guide have not been reviewed by a Quran teacher. Use it as a practice companion at home, not as a replacement for Quran classes.
The Arabic letters in this app are generated from a table of Unicode code points that is checked automatically, not typed by hand. If you are unsure about any letter or sound, ask your child's Quran teacher.
Progress stays on the device
No account and no sign-up. Your child's progress, meaning the last page and the mastered marks, is kept on this device only and is never sent to any server.
To erase all progress, open parent mode and choose Reset progress. After it has been opened once with internet, the app works without internet.
